Thoughts from a group of college students on their first trip to Haiti:
“I was homeless in high school and it was nothing like this.”
“On the basketball court we were the same, no barriers, just people.”
“It’s the first time in my life I have ever been somewhere where I was in the majority.”
“I really had no idea what service learning meant. I was a little frustrated going into the trip, wondering what we would actually do. Now I get it, it’s all about spending time with the people and us learning from each other.”
“I was so nervous, I almost backed out of this trip. When I walked into my room last night my heart sank, I thought ‘there’s no way I can stay here for a week’. But this morning I woke up and just decided to give it my all.”
“The three Cs. Color- the people here embrace bright colors. Confidence- I saw a team member with so much confidence and I realized he’s probably having the best experience because he isn’t afraid. and Colonialism- it saddens me to see the way Western Culture has influenced Haiti and the way some of their customs have been lost”
